State examinations at the vocational education and training research group
We only accept requests for state examinations at the beginning of the registration periods. Please refrain from submitting requests too early. The examination periods is determined by the examination centre of Teachers' Academy of Hessen.
We conduct examinations with an educational science or sociological focus, either orally or in writing. We only accept one of the two examinations areas and forms. When contacting us, please indicate in which examination section and area you would like to be examined.
We are happy to accept your examinations for the first state examination in educational sciences, focusing on the respective expertise area of our research group. A list of general subject areas can be found here here (opens in new tab) . Withing these, you would need to narrow down a specific question or topic area to focus on. Additional independent research will be required.
All submissions should include the following aspects (please consider when structuring/preparing):
• Derivation/Justification of the topic
• Definition of terms
• Theoretical positioning, explanation of relevant theoretical approaches/models
• Summary of relevant empirical findings including open questions/ limitations tof the studies used
• Implications for practice (teaching concepts, approaches to professionalisation, etc.)
a) You can submit a request by email at the beginning of the registration period, provided you agree to the information given here. In your request, please specify the exam area, form and chosen topic focus; only relevant requests can be processed. We will review your request and respond as soon as possible (within 3 days).
b) Once you have received confirmation, please email us the completed registration document as soon as possible for us to sign. We will only sign if all fields are filled out and it matches to the agreed form and area.
c) By the end of November (for spring exams) or May (for autumns exams), you must create an initial draft with a title and key references for your topic and take part in a Doodle survey to arrange a meeting.
d) In December (for the spring exams) or June ( for the autumns exams) one-hour consultation session is offered to discuss the examination procedures and the initial draft. There will be plenty of time to discuss any individual questions you may have, and you are encouraged to form peer groups or teams with people with the same topics.
e) You must work independently on your topics. In order to ensure that all candidates have access to the same information, no further questions will be answered.
f) Examination: The dates are coordinated by the Teacher's Academy of Hessen -questions regarding this cannot and will not be answered.
In accordance with the selected thematic area, two complex questions will be provided in the written examination. The examination will be conducted over a four-hour period.
The oral examination involves a discussion of your thematic area, which will be presented and analysed in a 30- minute conversation.
As this is a scholarly work, it is essential that the criteria of good scientific practice are adhered to!
Please ensure to use sufficient academic literature to address the complexity your topic. Please cite sources consistently, for example in accordance with APA style, although a specific citation style is not mandatory. Furthermore, it is expected htat the language used will be gender-sensitive, in accordance with the guidelines set out by TU-Darmstadt
Further important information will be provided during the consultation session for exam preparation!
