Lisa Morath

In the context of the ‘Digital learning platform for the transition from school to work’ project, which is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the ‘career swipe’ game was developed in collaboration with the research group serious games at TU Darmstadt. The objective was to motivate young people to engage in critical reflection on their career choices.

The SG4BB project is a collaborative project of the Technical University of Darmstadt (research group serious games, department of multimedia communication, and chair of vocational education and VET research) with educational providers and project partners from the gaming industry. Within this context, a platform was developed for identifying, integrating, testing and evaluating personalized serious games and playful learning offerings within the domain of vocational training.

The objective was to utilise a search engine to identify suitable learning games for specific occupational fields and groups, thereby enabling users and educational providers to download and integrate them into their own learning management systems via marketplace. Furthermore, two AI-supported, game-based teaching and learning offerings were developed and tested in an interdisciplinary manner, with the objective of evaluating their efficacy in the context of research, development and practice. The game entitled 'Corrugated' was awarded the RAL serious games quality label in recognition of its status as a high-quality game.

The BIBB-TUDa vocational orientation study examines the impact of two distinct careers orientation programmes:

1. the utilisation of training ambassadors in the classroom setting, and

2. a self-designed workshop in which students engage with the partially unconscious rationale underlying career decision-making.

The objective of the study is to investigate the effects of both programmes and to identify the conditions under which the benefits of both programmes can be optimized.

For this purpose, students are interviewed prior to and following the implementation of the respective programmes using standardized questionnaires. The investigation is centered on the subjective experiences of the adolescents in relation to the visits of the training ambassadors and the workshop on the logics of career choice. Conversely, the study seeks to ascertain whether the adolescents' career concepts evolve in a manner that is more realistic and devoid of stereotypes, and whether they feel empowered to make a reflective and autonomous career choice.

What we do

Conducting a transnational student survey on the topic of career choice tendencies of the teaching profession; online survey using SoSci Survey. The aim is to investigate the question “Why is the teaching profession (not) of interest to students?”

Target group of the survey

Pupils from all educational programs leading to university entrance qualifications (general and subject-specific university entrance qualification).

This means that the survey can be conducted at both vocational and general education schools (upper secondary level) as well as the specialized classes of the dual system.

Based on research on career choice and career choice tendencies on the basis of expectancy-value theories and “Gottfredson's theory of circumscription and compromise”.
